Living through a nightmare of captivity, Silvia Cunio, a resident of Kibbutz Nir Oz, has shared the harrowing story of her family during the October 7 attacks. Eight members of her family were abducted by Hamas, with her sons David and Ariel enduring 738 days in Gaza captivity before their eventual release.
A Nightmare Begins
On the eve of October 6, 2023, the Cunio family gathered to celebrate a grandson's birthday with balloons and cake. Just hours later, sirens shattered the peace. Silvia locked herself in the safe room with her husband, Luis, who held the door handle for hours as terrorists attempted to break in multiple times. While communicating silently via WhatsApp with her son Ariel, the family's world completely collapsed.
"We entered a horror movie, and that was it," Silvia recounts.
The Agony of Captivity
Out of 20 family members and friends present at the kibbutz that morning, eight were taken. While some relatives were released after weeks, David and Ariel remained trapped in underground tunnels for over two years. Silvia describes the unbearable psychological toll of daily life while knowing her children suffered extreme deprivation.
