Former Anthropic Claude Code Leader Cat Wu Joins OpenAI as Core Product Head
Cat Wu, former product leader for Anthropic's Claude Code, is joining OpenAI to lead core product management. The high-profile move marks a significant talent acquisition for OpenAI amidst intense AI industry competition.

Cat Wu, a leading figure behind Anthropic's Claude Code product, is joining its chief rival, OpenAI, as the head of product management for Core Products. Wu announced the move in a post on X, confirming that OpenAI has welcomed her appointment, while Anthropic declined to comment.
"We’ll build agents that have your back and your team’s, and keep you in control, so you get more time for the people and work you love," Wu wrote in her statement. She emphasized her respect for OpenAI and its vast user base, noting that the platform serves over a billion monthly active users.
Scaling Success and Industry Rivalry
Wu played a pivotal role at Anthropic, guiding Claude Code from an internal prototype into a commercial product that significantly boosted the company's revenue and transformed daily software engineering workflows. Her departure marks a major talent coup for OpenAI amid intense competition within the artificial intelligence sector.
Her exit from Anthropic occurred just weeks before the company's planned public offering, as executives pitch financial metrics to investors. Addressing questions on social media regarding potential early stock sales, Wu stated that financial timing was not a factor in her decision.
Career Trajectory and Market Impact
This marks Wu's second departure from Anthropic. In 2025, she and Claude Code creator Boris Cherny briefly moved to the AI coding startup Cursor before returning to Anthropic later that year. Throughout late 2025 and 2026, Wu and Cherny spearheaded the rapid adoption of Claude Code as code-generation models advanced.
Both Claude Code and OpenAI's competing tool, Codex, have gained widespread popularity among developers seeking to automate programming tasks. OpenAI is currently expanding Codex beyond technical engineering tasks, focusing on multi-step workflows as a cornerstone of its broader expansion strategy.
