Brazilian Police Arrest Suspected Serial Killer Linked to Dozens of Murders

Brazilian police have arrested suspected serial killer Jourlan Lopes de Silva, accused of murdering 16 people over the past three months, with suspicions mounting that he may have killed dozens more over the past two decades. De Silva, 33, operated in the remote rural area of Mulungu in the northeastern state of Paraíba, earning the local moniker 'The Mosquito' due to his slender build.

Manhunt and Dramatic Arrest

Investigator Douglas Garcia, who led the two-day operation that resulted in de Silva's capture on September 13, stated that the suspect's slight physical frame allowed him to evade capture for years by hiding in makeshift jungle camps. "Jourlan lived mainly in the forests, which is why it was so difficult to track him down and link him to crimes that initially seemed unrelated," Garcia explained.

"We caught him because he couldn't reach his tent in the forest, and out of desperation he acquired this disguise, took this baby who is not his, and was ultimately arrested," said investigator Douglas Garcia.

Police tracked de Silva down after he fatally shot an 18-year-old man in a public square in Mulungu. At the time of his arrest, de Silva was wearing a black dress with white stripes, a wig, and nail polish, while wearing sunglasses and carrying a two-year-old toddler who authorities confirmed is not related to him.

Confessions and Ongoing Investigations

While de Silva claimed to investigators that he exclusively targeted criminals, evidence gathered by law enforcement suggests otherwise. Furthermore, police revealed that the suspect has boasted about murdering approximately 80 people throughout his lifetime, claiming his first murder was committed when he was only 13 years old.

Authorities are currently reopening cold cases and maintaining strict confidentiality regarding victim identities and specific circumstances to ensure the integrity of the upcoming prosecution.
