Charles Barkley earned tens of millions of dollars during his storied NBA career, but one of his most lucrative deals was actually sparked on a golf course rather than the hardwood. The basketball legend and veteran analyst revealed in an interview with Dan Patrick how a financial tip from his close friend Michael Jordan completely transformed his Nike endorsement contract, ultimately netting him an estimated $50 million.
At the time, Barkley was making roughly $3 million a year. While playing golf, Jordan advised him to stop taking the full cash amount and instead take $1 million in cash while converting the remaining $2 million into company stock options. Barkley consulted his financial team, who immediately pushed back, calling the move too risky. However, having known Jordan since the 1984 Olympic trials, Barkley trusted his business acumen and decided to make the gamble.
Jordan's vision paid off spectacularly as Nike transformed into a global sportswear giant. In previous interviews, Barkley recalled that the initial stock options were worth about $35 per unit, and subsequent stock splits and massive growth multiplied his returns tenfold. Following a meeting arranged by mutual friend Vince Coleman on a golf course, the two Hall of Famers reconciled, putting their long-standing feud behind them over a round of golf.
