Weapons on the streets: suspect fired in central Jaffa and attempted to flee with a loaded pistol
A suspect in his 30s was arrested following a shooting in central Jaffa, found with a loaded pistol, and prosecutors announced today they intend to file charges. In Tayibe, another suspect was arrested after attempting to flee and discarding a bag containing a Glock pistol, two full magazines, and gloves.
A prosecutor's statement was filed today (Sunday) against a Jaffa resident in his 30s, suspected of a shooting that occurred about two weeks ago in the heart of the city. According to police, shortly after the shots were heard, he was located while attempting to escape, and a search revealed a pistol loaded with ammunition.
The incident took place on August 18, when reports of gunfire were received at the 100 emergency center. There were no casualties. Police officers from the Jaffa station operating in the area arrived at the scene and identified the suspect.
Police stated that the suspect attempted to flee upon their arrival but was apprehended shortly thereafter. A search revealed the loaded pistol. He was transferred to the Jaffa station for questioning and has remained in custody, with his detention extended multiple times. Today, following the completion of the evidentiary file, the prosecution announced its intention to file formal charges in the coming days.
While the Jaffa case moves toward indictment, another weapon seizure was recorded over the weekend in the central region. In Tayibe, station detectives and Border Police (MAGAV) volunteers spotted a suspect who began to flee during an operation in the city.
During the pursuit, the suspect discarded a bag. Officers engaged in a foot chase and apprehended him shortly afterward. A search of the area where the bag was dropped revealed a Glock-type pistol, two magazines full of ammunition, and gloves.
The suspect, a Tayibe resident in his 30s, was taken for questioning and subsequently brought to court, which extended his detention until September 1. The pistol and other evidence were transferred to forensic laboratories for testing.
These two seizures, occurring days apart in different cities, highlight the ongoing challenge posed by illegal weapons circulating in the hands of suspects and appearing at crime scenes—whether used in urban shootings or discarded during attempts to evade law enforcement.
