Passengers on an Arkia flight to Albania faced a grueling ordeal at Ben Gurion Airport after their flight, originally scheduled for 15:00, was repeatedly delayed. Journalist Linoy Bar-Geffen, who was among the stranded travelers, took to social media to document the chaotic situation in Terminal 1, warning the public to stay away from the airport entirely.
Chaos and Confusion at Terminal 1
According to Bar-Geffen's viral posts, passengers endured hours of waiting as departure times were pushed from 19:00 to 23:00. Travelers wishing to abandon the trip encountered severe bureaucratic hurdles. Those who had already checked their bags could not simply leave because no Arkia representative was present to retrieve the luggage. Passengers carrying only hand luggage were forced to shuttle from Terminal 1 to Terminal 3 just to cancel their flights and obtain exit approval.
"Want to quit? You can't take checked bags and leave because there is no Arkia representative at the field. Do not approach Ben Gurion. Just don't," Bar-Geffen wrote.
Conflicting Explanations and Airline Response
Frustrated passengers received contradictory explanations for the delays. While some were told the holdup was caused by general congestion at Ben Gurion Airport, others were informed of a technical malfunction with the aircraft.
Arkia issued an official response addressing the incident:
"Following a delay in the departure of the previous flight and a late takeoff slot received, the flight to Tirana was postponed. Throughout the waiting period, Arkia made sure to constantly update the passengers and provided them with food vouchers. We apologize to the passengers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience and understanding."
Despite the distribution of food vouchers, long queues formed for fast-food outlets, adding to the general fatigue. Following the eventual departure and arrival, Bar-Geffen humorously noted on social media that she was assigned hotel room number 911, remarking that after such an exhausting ordeal, it felt as though they had practically crashed.
