Apple is developing a new smart home camera sensor designed to identify people and movement throughout the house without recording video footage, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.

The device is expected to be small and cylindrical, roughly the size and shape of a tube of lipstick, allowing users to place multiple units in different rooms. Unlike standard security cameras, it will operate at a very low frame rate, capturing images primarily used by Apple's artificial intelligence systems to understand room activity.

A core capability will be facial recognition. If the system detects a person entering a room, it can identify familiar individuals and send a corresponding text notification to the user, or alert them if an unrecognized person is present.

This approach distinguishes the product from traditional security cameras, though it presents a limitation: no video footage will be available to review after a break-in. However, Apple may leverage this privacy-centric design to emphasize data protection.

The technology is similar to camera systems Apple is developing for future AirPods equipped with tiny lenses, utilizing low-resolution images analyzed by Visual Intelligence to interpret the user's environment.
