Every traveler knows the frustration: returning from a long trip with tens of thousands of photos, then having to manually pick out the 140 or 150 truly successful shots to design a printed family photo album. Until now, sorting images on the iPhone has been a tedious task requiring endless scrolling. Now, in iOS, Apple is finally releasing a feature users have yearned for: the ability to rate photos with 1 to 5 stars, just like in professional editing software, and filter them with a single click.

How to Enable Photo Ratings on Your iPhone

The new option is not enabled by default and requires navigating through the device settings menus. Once activated, users can review their gallery, award 5 stars to the best shots, and subsequently display only those tagged images, saving hours of searching.

  • Open the Settings app on your iPhone and scroll down to select Photos.

  • Locate the Rating Controls option and toggle the switch to on.

  • Open the Photos app. When viewing a specific image or selecting multiple photos, a new slider will appear allowing a 1 to 5-star rating.

  • Use the gallery filter options to display only photos matching a specific rating, such as 4 or 5 stars.

This feature transforms mobile photo management, bringing professional desktop workflow capabilities directly to iOS users organizing large media libraries.

By organizing the gallery efficiently, finding winning pictures for social media or special projects becomes instantaneous, eliminating endless scrolling through duplicate frames.
