WhatsApp Launches Guest Calling, Allowing Browser-Based Calls Without Accounts
Meta has launched WhatsApp Guest Calling globally, allowing users to join browser-based voice and video calls without an account or phone number, challenging Zoom.

Meta has officially rolled out its new "Guest Calling" feature for WhatsApp worldwide, breaking one of the biggest barriers in digital communication. The new feature allows anyone to join a voice or video call directly through a web browser on a computer, even if they have never opened a WhatsApp account or registered a phone number.
Competition and Unlimited Duration
The current launch poses a direct competitive threat to popular video conferencing services, most notably Zoom and Microsoft Teams. The standout consumer advantage of WhatsApp is the absence of any time limits: unlike free Zoom accounts that automatically disconnect calls after 40 minutes, WhatsApp guest calls are completely free and unlimited in duration. Furthermore, all calls continue to be end-to-end encrypted by default, ensuring full user privacy.
Seamless Joining and Collaboration
The joining process is straightforward and requires no software installation: the host creates a dedicated link within the app and distributes it via email or text message. The guest accesses the link through a web browser, enters their first name, and can participate in individual or group calls of up to 32 participants. Despite not having an account, guests enjoy full screen sharing capabilities, a "hand raise" feature, and quick emoji reactions.
Every guest who clicks the link is automatically sent to a waiting room and must receive manual approval from the host before entering.
Security and Future Integrations
To prevent harassment and unauthorized entries, WhatsApp has implemented strict security mechanisms. The host has exclusive authority to disconnect participants at any time, and guests remain anonymous regarding other participants' phone numbers.
Later this year, WhatsApp is expected to complete its integration into office meetings by releasing special plugins for Google Calendar and Outlook. These tools will automatically generate WhatsApp call links directly from calendar invitations.
