Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein, a 92-year-old observant Jewish jurist who spent nearly three decades on the bench in Manhattan, has died in New York. His passing was confirmed by the administration of the U.S. Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York, though no cause of death was immediately released.

Just 13 days prior, Hellerstein presided over a preliminary hearing in the high-profile criminal case against ousted Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The couple was captured in January during a U.S. military operation in Venezuela, transferred to New York, and charged with cocaine trafficking and torture conspiracy. During the October 15 session, Hellerstein interrupted Maduro's outbursts to enter not-guilty pleas on his behalf and pushed the trial start date to June 14, 2027.

Hellerstein's death leaves the complex proceeding without a judge as the court seeks a replacement. U.S. federal judges hold lifetime appointments, and Hellerstein, appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998, took senior status in 2011 to reduce his workload while continuing to handle major litigation. While attorneys praised his sharp intellect and independence—noting his rulings against Trump administration efforts and his handling of 9/11 litigation—his advanced age had recently sparked questions regarding courtroom alertness and judicial capacity.

The unexpected vacancy now forces the federal court to reassign the intricate Maduro case, raising uncertainties about whether the scheduled trial timeline will hold as legal teams prepare for extensive debates over presidential immunity and extradition legality.
