Severe Floods in Sinai Leave One Dead and Roads Blocked
Severe floods in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula have left one person dead and another missing after a truck was swept away near Nuweiba, while regional authorities have reopened roads following heavy storms.
Severe storms and heavy rainfall struck the Negev and Eilat regions this week, leading to road closures along routes leading to Eilat. While the weather system passed without major damage inside Israel, the heavy downpours severely impacted neighboring Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula, a popular destination for Israeli travelers.
According to local reports, the torrential rains claimed the life of one person, left another missing, and injured a third after their truck was swept away by floodwaters near the coastal city of Nuweiba in southeastern Sinai. The severe weather also caused extensive damage in the Taba region, destroying numerous tourist campsites, beach huts, and lodging units.
Members of the travelers' community expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, paying tribute to the victim, who was widely known and beloved among visitors to the region. Longtime community members remembered him as a uniquely kind and generous individual with a massive heart.
By Wednesday, roughly a day after the disaster, regional authorities announced that all roads blocked or damaged by the floods had been reopened to traffic. Officials reported no further casualties while continuing to monitor weather conditions and maintain vigilance against potential new storms.
Although the immediate storm system has subsided, Egypt's meteorological service has warned of possible intermittent rainfall across central and southern Sinai, as well as parts of the Red Sea Governorate. Authorities in South Sinai remain on high alert, closely monitoring drainage channels and preparing for ongoing debris clearance.
