4 months after the death of Reut Cohen and her unborn twins: the family is still waiting for answers
The family of the late Reut Cohen, who passed away at Meir Hospital while 28 weeks pregnant, is demanding answers from the Ministry of Health as the promised investigative committee has yet to convene. The Ministry stated that the committee will begin its work next month.
Four months have passed since the tragic death of 35-year-old Reut Cohen at Meir Hospital in Kfar Saba, where she was admitted while 28 weeks pregnant with twins. Despite intensive and prolonged resuscitation efforts, medical teams were unable to save the mother or her babies.
Following the tragedy, the family claimed that a week prior to her death, Reut had sought care at Sheba Medical Center due to feeling unwell but was discharged. Sheba Hospital rejected allegations of negligence:
"Upon learning of this exceptional case, a professional team was established to examine the incident. An initial review shows that the patient received comprehensive and professional treatment in accordance with strict medical standards. Unfortunately, there are extremely rare cases of sudden deterioration that are not necessarily accompanied by early warning signs."
Meir Hospital also stated that she had been discharged in stable condition.
Although the Ministry of Health announced the formation of an investigative committee, Reut's brother, Itai, reports that no progress has been made. The family is now calling for transparency and a clear timeline.
"A whole month has passed since the Ministry of Health informed us that the committee would convene in the coming days. But, of course, that did not happen," Itai stated.
In a painful public post, he suggested that the delay might be linked to the political climate, arguing that the case of a healthy mother being discharged from major hospitals only to pass away later deserves immediate priority.
"How much longer will you leave a family that lost three souls and is waiting for the justice it deserves?" he concluded.
The Ministry of Health responded:
"The Ministry shares in the family's deep sorrow and remains in contact with them. The investigative committee will convene next month to gather information and hear testimonies from the family and staff. The committee's schedule is not influenced by the election period. This is a professional and in-depth process that requires time to examine all evidence. Upon completion, the Ministry will transparently publish the findings, after the report has been shared with the family as required by law."
