Routine surgery leads to catastrophic results due to medical error
Four patients admitted for routine joint replacement surgeries at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital Midtown in Nashville, Tennessee, suffered severe complications after receiving the wrong medication. Instead of the local anesthetic bupivacaine, they were mistakenly injected with potassium phosphate. At least one patient has been left without sensation in most of her body.
