Houthis Advance on Key Yemeni Strongholds as Saudi Tensions Mount
Houthi forces are advancing toward key Yemeni territories like Marib and Taiz, threatening remaining government strongholds as regional tensions escalate.
The conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia continues to escalate as the Yemeni rebels push forward with a strategic offensive aimed at seizing control of key territories. According to CNN, the Houthis are preparing for the next phase of their campaign against the internationally recognized Yemeni government forces, setting their sights on the contested provinces of Marib and Taiz, with the port city of Aden potentially next.
The capture of the mountainous Taiz province and the oil- and gas-rich Marib province would severely disrupt government supply lines. Yemeni analyst Mohammed Al-Basha warned that the fall of these remaining government strongholds would effectively spell game over for the legitimate administration. Despite suffering rapid defeats in western Yemen, including the port city of Al-Mokha, government forces are currently mounting stiffer resistance in Taiz, backed by local tribes.
Simultaneously, intense fighting is underway in Marib, home to Yemen's largest energy reserves. Government forces have reportedly utilized artillery, rockets, and Saudi air support to repel the insurgent advances. The Institute for the Study of Warfare noted that capturing Marib would allow the Houthis to exploit local oil resources to finance their military and political operations.
Political analysts emphasize that the Houthis do not necessarily need to defeat Saudi Arabia militarily. Instead, their strategy relies on pressuring Riyadh and avoiding costly urban combat by encircling government positions. Meanwhile, G7 leaders have condemned the Houthi attacks against the Kingdom and called on Iran to halt its military support for the insurgent group.
