However, a joint study by Stanford University researchers and the US startup BetterUp reveals that this relentless push has backfired, creating a counterproductive burden.
Workslop defines a phenomenon where employees use AI to generate content that looks polished on the surface but is practically useless—such as bloated presentations, overly dense reports, or convoluted code without logical purpose. This creates a false illusion of high productivity while offloading the actual cleanup work onto colleagues.
Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke recently addressed this issue, admitting that his aggressive push for AI adoption created internal chaos. In a podcast interview, Lutke noted that lazy work now manifests as excessive output rather than a reduction in deliverables. "We call them 'slop grenades' that people throw at each other," Lutke explained.
Millions Wasted Annually
Researchers surveyed 1,150 full-time office workers in the US and found that 40% received Workslop over the past month. Each incident wastes an average of two hours to resolve, costing approximately $186 per employee monthly. For a company with 10,000 employees, this translates to an annual loss of roughly $9 million.
Beyond financial losses, Workslop severely damages workplace relationships. When employees pass off unverified, AI-generated debris to their peers, trust and collaboration erode. Frustration grows, leading to organizational friction and duplicated efforts.
How to Combat Workslop
Researchers suggest a straightforward solution: abandon the "AI at any cost" mandate. Organizations must establish clear guidelines, tools, and cultural norms for responsible AI usage rather than demanding indiscriminate implementation.
