ShinyHunters Hack Exposes Sensitive Medical Data from Agency Recruitment Systems
International hackers ShinyHunters stole 3 terabytes of data from recruitment systems, exposing sensitive medical records of agency employees and raising espionage concerns.
The international hacker group ShinyHunters has stolen personal data belonging to agency employees, compromising recruitment and vetting systems in a breach that has raised significant espionage concerns.
The group claimed responsibility for the cyberattack targeting the recruitment portal FBIjobs.gov, exfiltrating approximately 3 terabytes of data. Reuters verified parts of the leak, revealing that the internal system FBI MedLink, which contains employee medical records, was compromised. The leaked documents include pre-employment psychiatric evaluations, blood and urine test results, electrocardiogram records, and detailed medical histories.
Cybersecurity consultant and former agent Eric O'Neal noted that the exposure of sensitive medical data creates severe espionage risks. "I would be surprised if Russian intelligence isn't knocking on their door asking for this material," O'Neal stated.
The bureau has not commented directly on the contents of the leaked documents, stating only that an intensive investigation is underway regarding the reported cyberattack.
