Wolt Receives Ultimatum Over Couriers: "30 Days to Fix It"

Drama on the roads: The National Road Safety Authority has sent a sharp letter to the CEO of Wolt Israel, Tomer Cohen, demanding that a work plan be formulated within 30 days to reduce public danger. The demand follows numerous traffic violations by couriers, including riding on sidewalks, driving against the flow of traffic, running red lights, using mobile phones, and riding without identification.

According to a report in "Israel Hayom", a survey of 100 couriers in Israel found that every respondent had been involved in at least one accident while working, with accident rates rising over the past 3 years.

Enforcement operations have shown that many couriers operate illegally, violating age or eligibility requirements, while the company's uniform makes vehicle identification difficult. The Road Safety Authority argues that the company’s incentive model, linked to delivery speed and time, encourages couriers to take risks. The Authority demands:

1. Full identity verification and screening mechanisms

2. Safety training

3. An accessible complaint mechanism

4. A review of the reward system

5. Establishment of safety indicators and closer cooperation with authorities

Moti Adari, Chairman of the Road Safety Authority Council, warned in his letter—also forwarded to Minister of Transport Miri Regev—that without systematic internal changes, the Authority will pursue legal proceedings to examine the status of the couriers and the company's liability.

Wolt responded that they welcome the opportunity to work with the Road Safety Authority. The company noted that a safety program has been in place since 2023, including numbered bags, training, and public contact channels, and stated they are eager to promote practical solutions for the benefit of all road users.
