WhatsApp Expands Parental Control Features
WhatsApp is updating its parental control system, allowing parents to manage security settings for children's accounts. New features enable parents to restrict who can contact their child and which groups they can join, while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
WhatsApp is expanding its parental control system, making it significantly easier for parents to manage protected accounts for their children. A new dedicated section in the iPhone settings allows parents to link their phone to their child's account. Crucially, this does not grant parents access to read private messages; instead, it provides control over the communication environment and security settings.
This update builds upon the parent-managed accounts launched in March for children under the minimum age for independent use (typically 13). While previously difficult to locate, WhatsApp is now making these settings more prominent, following a rollout on Android that is now reaching iPhone users.
The setup process requires both devices. Parents initiate the connection via a code or invitation, after which the child's core account settings are locked, preventing the child from changing them independently.
A central feature is the management of incoming inquiries. Messages from unknown users are directed to a separate area, where parents can review and approve or reject contact requests. This allows children to communicate safely with family and friends without being exposed to unsolicited messages.
Control also extends to group participation and privacy settings. WhatsApp provides notifications regarding account activity, and the child is aware that their account is linked, ensuring transparency.
WhatsApp maintains a strict boundary: parents do not receive copies of messages, nor do they have access to conversation content or voice and video calls. End-to-end encryption remains fully intact, and WhatsApp itself declares no access to the content of these communications.
Accounts for children are functionally limited: features such as channels, status updates, and Meta's AI services are unavailable. These restrictions are designed to reduce exposure for younger users.
Once the child reaches the appropriate age, WhatsApp will notify the family of the option to switch to a standard account, unlocking all features. The update is being rolled out gradually, so it may not be immediately available to all users.
