Yuval Noah Harari Warns Humanity Could Become 'Cows of the Future'

Historian and philosopher Yuval Noah Harari has warned about the future of humanity under advanced artificial intelligence, suggesting that humans risk becoming the 'cows of the future'. In a recent interview with Czech public television, Harari compared humanity's future relationship with AI to the way cattle live under human agricultural and financial control without understanding how those systems operate.

"Cows know that humans exist, they can see us. But cows do not know that money exists," Harari stated. "How can you explain the bond market to a cow, even though it dictates its life?" According to Harari, just as cows are impacted by stock and bond markets without grasping economic structures, humans may find themselves increasingly dependent on AI systems whose decisions and underlying logic exceed intellectual comprehension.

The Shift Toward Financial and Bureaucratic Control

Harari emphasized that the primary danger of AI is not physical destruction by killer robots roaming the streets, but rather the gradual takeover of critical infrastructure, particularly financial markets and administrative bureaucracy. This technological shift risks diminishing human capability to influence societal decisions.

"What will happen in the future is not that AI will become robots that go out into the streets and shoot us. AI is taking over the financial system. It is taking over all the bureaucracy," he explained. AI holds a distinct advantage in administrative environments because it can process and retain vast amounts of data that surpass human cognitive limits.

The Growing Complexity Gap

By leveraging these capabilities, AI will construct increasingly sophisticated financial and legal systems. While these structures will function efficiently, their sheer complexity will make it difficult for both ordinary citizens and experts to comprehend them.

This structural imbalance could create a future where humans remain part of the system governing their existence while retaining no meaningful operational control. Within a decade or two, humanity risks gazing at AI-driven financial networks with the same bewildered incomprehension that cows reserve for human economics.
