A motion to certify a class action lawsuit against WhatsApp was filed today at the Lod District Court, following a wave of sudden user account suspensions that has impacted numerous Israelis in recent weeks. While the exact number of affected users remains within WhatsApp's databases, the lawsuit's damages are estimated to exceed 2.5 million NIS.

According to the motion, filed by attorneys Guy Ofir and Victoria Reznik, the platform's conduct violates Israeli law and consumer expectations:

"WhatsApp repeatedly suspends the accounts of Israeli users and businesses without prior warning, without detailing the alleged violation, without providing time to remedy it, and without an appeal mechanism or human customer support."

Automated System Glitch Suspected

In recent weeks, numerous Israeli users and business owners reported that their accounts were disabled for no apparent reason. The plaintiffs argue that this is not a global phenomenon but one concentrated specifically in Israel. The pattern typically involves an account being blocked, restored, and then blocked again days later, pointing to a potential glitch in WhatsApp's automated detection algorithms.

The lead plaintiff is Tik Travel, a tourism company based in Rishon LeZion. The company's WhatsApp Business account was suspended three times between December 2025 and July 2026. The first two suspensions were lifted automatically without explanation, but the third ban in July was permanent, accompanied only by a generic message stating that "some activity may violate terms of use" and explicitly noting that "a review cannot be requested."

Demands for Transparency and Human Support

Attorney Guy Ofir stated:

"In recent months, WhatsApp has deployed a bot that went wild, blocking accounts under laconic claims of terms-of-service violations. It is a scandal that regulators allow such a powerful entity to operate without oversight, customer service, or transparency. We hope the court will make its voice heard."

The lawsuit requests that the court order WhatsApp to:

  • Cease arbitrary account suspensions;

  • Implement a warning system detailing specific violations;

  • Provide a reasonable grace period to correct any issues;

  • Establish a functional appeal process managed by human representatives;

  • Compensate affected users for financial and non-financial damages.
