Esty Cohen, a web designer and AI developer from Israel, decided to tackle this common challenge by building her own AI-powered financial manager that operates directly inside WhatsApp.
Building a Personal Financial Agent
Cohen and her husband previously tracked their income and expenses using a standard Google Sheets document. However, manually updating the spreadsheet required consistent discipline and often led to friction when managing household budgets. Seeking a more accessible solution, Cohen used the Base44 platform to create "Beni," an AI assistant integrated into a shared WhatsApp group.
The AI agent acts as a natural conversational partner. When Cohen or her husband makes a purchase, they simply send a quick text message or a photo of a receipt to the WhatsApp group. Beni automatically logs the amount, categorizes the expense, updates the spreadsheet, and provides real-time budget summaries upon request. Beyond finances, the assistant has evolved into a comprehensive family helper, even drafting classified ads when needed.
"We didn't set out to build a complex technological product; we simply wanted a practical solution for a real everyday need," Cohen explains. "You don't need to be a programmer to create incredible tools with AI."
The Future of AI in Daily Life
Cohen built the entire system within half an hour without writing any code. By defining categories, automatic summaries, and spending rules, she tailored the assistant specifically to her family's lifestyle. While the tool is currently for personal use, Cohen is exploring ways to package the technology for other households and financial advisors looking to help clients maintain their budgeting habits long-term.
