Almost every user is familiar with the frustrating experience: an innocent entry into the YouTube app to search for a professional guide or an educational video, which ends in an endless hour-long scroll inside a "bottomless pit" of random content. The video giant's algorithm is designed with a clear goal to keep you connected to the screen for as long as possible, but through a few simple setting changes, you can take back the reins and clean the feed of distractions.

What can be done?

The first step to regaining control is disabling autoplay. This feature causes videos to play in a chain without stopping and pollutes the algorithm with irrelevant topics based on a single random view. To turn it off, you must enter the profile picture, select "Settings", go to "Playback" and disable the option. At the same time, vertical Shorts videos create an uncontrollable scrolling urge. Under the "Time management" menu, you can set a daily viewing quota, for example, only 15 minutes, or disable the feed entirely.

Another significant nuisance is the preview of videos on the home screen. Autoplay while scrolling creates a visual overload of large subtitles, reveals spoilers of the content before opening it, and even consumes expensive mobile data. Disabling the feature is done in the same "Playback" menu by turning off the "Preview" option, an action that restores the original cover image and saves your data plan.

Subscription order and training the algorithm

The root of a messy feed lies in an inflated subscription list. An account subscribed to dozens of old channels with interests that are no longer relevant will lead to flooding the home page with unnecessary recommendations. It is recommended to perform a periodic check of the subscription list and remove channels you do not watch. In addition, consistently clicking the "Not interested" button on unwanted videos will signal to the system exactly what content you are really interested in.

Combining these four steps turns YouTube from an addictive platform into an efficient and focused tool for work and leisure. You do not need to give up the app or quality content, but simply set clear boundaries for Google's algorithm. Dedicating two minutes to updating the settings will save you many hours of blind scrolling every week and ensure that your home page serves you and not the other way around.
