Maduro Associate Arrested in US Over Massive Venezuelan Corruption Scandal
A fugitive tied to Nicolas Maduro's regime was arrested in the U.S. over a massive corruption scandal involving billions in embezzled Venezuelan food and housing funds.

A fugitive linked to the dictatorial regime of Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela was recently arrested in the United States on suspicion of involvement in a massive corruption scandal. The suspect, 62-year-old Alvaro Pulido Vargas, was captured in a Homeland Security Task Force operation and will face serious charges in a federal court in South Florida.
Pulido, a Colombian citizen, faces two separate criminal cases. He allegedly helped funnel funds originating from Venezuelan government bribery schemes through U.S. banks to conceal illicit profits. One case involves approximately $1.6 billion in government contracts for food and medical supplies, while the other involves a roughly $350 million fraud scheme targeting a government housing program.
The U.S. Department of Justice strongly reacted to the arrest. Prosecutors accused Pulido Vargas of exploiting programs meant to provide essential supplies and housing to Venezuelan citizens. According to court documents, Pulido and his associates paid bribes to secure contracts and then inflated prices to cover the payouts and pocket massive profits. The funds were allegedly laundered through a network of companies and bank accounts in Antigua, the United Arab Emirates, the USA, and elsewhere, with each money laundering count carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
