The first week of the US Open is drawing to a close, with the highly anticipated Round of 16 matches scheduled to begin on Sunday evening.
Men's Singles: Alcaraz Faces Paul, Shelton Meets Tsitsipas
Carlos Alcaraz (2, Spain) has enjoyed a smooth run so far in his comeback from a lengthy injury layoff. In the Round of 16, he will face Tommy Paul (20, USA). Alcaraz holds a 6-2 head-to-head lead over the American, having won all three of their previous Grand Slam encounters: at Wimbledon, Roland Garros, and earlier this year at the Australian Open.
Despite being the clear underdog, Paul remains confident:
"I refuse to step onto the court without believing that I can beat any opponent."
American favorite Ben Shelton (8, USA) will attempt to halt the momentum of Stefanos Tsitsipas (world No. 53), who has already eliminated two seeded players. Tsitsipas commented on his upcoming opponent:
"I beat him in Cincinnati in 2023, but since then he has improved significantly and matured. This will be a very different Ben Shelton."

Surprisingly, this will be the first career meeting between the Belarusian star and the American, who is widely regarded as one of the top doubles players on the tour.
Meanwhile, Jessica Pegula (3, USA) keeps her Grand Slam title dreams alive. After a grueling battle against Leylah Fernandez in the previous round, she hopes for a smoother path in a veteran clash against Sorana Cirstea (16, Romania). While the 36-year-old Romanian won their first encounter back in 2011, the 32-year-old Pegula has won their last three meetings, including a victory in Cincinnati just two weeks ago.
