Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's Historic Streak Ends at 141 Games

One of the most remarkable streaks in NBA history has officially come to an end after 141 consecutive games. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the star of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the reigning league MVP, scored "only" 17 points in a 96:84 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday night, snapping his historic run of games with at least 20 points.

The Canadian star's unusual evening was apparent right from the first half, which he finished without a single field goal, scoring his only two points from the free-throw line. He finally netted his first field goal half a minute into the third quarter with a midrange jumper. SGA finished the game shooting 6-for-19 from the field, 3-for-11 from beyond the arc, and 2-for-2 from the line. He tried to extend the streak in the final quarter, scoring 10 points, but was subbed out with two minutes remaining as the game was already decided.

Looking Back at a Record-Breaking Run

To understand the magnitude of the Thunder star's achievement, one must look back to October 30, 2024. Back then, Gilgeous-Alexander scored 18 points in a 105:93 win over the San Antonio Alamo. Since then, for nearly two years, he poured in 20 points or more in every single outing. Last season, he broke Wilt Chamberlain's NBA record by scoring at least 20 points in his 127th consecutive game, ultimately pushing the milestone to 141.

"We just focused on playing our basketball in the second half and securing the defensive stops we needed," team representatives noted after the final buzzer.

Thunder Overpower Nuggets in the Second Half

Aside from the individual milestone, there was also a game to play. Denver led 48:44 at halftime, but the Thunder seized control after the break, outscoring their opponents 52:36 in the second half to pull away for the win. The Nuggets suffered through a particularly weak offensive night, committing 22 turnovers and shooting just 38% from the field. Aaron Gordon led Denver with 20 points, while Nikola Jokic added 13. Additionally, Cam Johnson injured his ankle and left the game in the first half.

On the winning side, Jalen Williams paced Oklahoma City with 21 points, while Chet Holmgren dominated the glass with 12 points and 17 rebounds, improving the Thunder's record to 2:0 to start the season.
