Unseasonal Rain Falls in Tel Aviv Amid Unusual Summer Weather
Unseasonal rain fell in Tel Aviv and across Israel, continuing a rare pattern of summer precipitation recorded by the Meteorological Service.
Rain fell today (Friday) in Tel Aviv, an unusual phenomenon for a period when summer is still felt across the country. Footage shows downpours in the city streets, following a sequence of unconventional rain events already recorded during the summer.
This past August was also characterized by two unusual rain events. According to the Meteorological Service, in the middle of the month, unusual amounts of rain fell in various areas across the country. In the first event, about 30 mm fell in the Jerusalem area and 26 mm in Maale Adumim—amounts not measured in these areas during the summer since records began. Double-digit rainfall amounts also fell in the Jordan Valley, which is also an unprecedented case for the region.
At the end of August, 8 mm was measured in Tel Aviv—an amount defined as locally unusual. The Meteorological Service notes that the occurrence of two rain events in the summer months, one of which included double-digit amounts, is rare.
Now the rain is also arriving in September, a month when significant precipitation is usually not recorded. The seasonal forecast of the Meteorological Service predicts that temperatures in September will be higher than average, yet the past summer month and the first days of autumn are providing a sequence of unusual rain events.
