Ben Gurion Airport Fines Surge 709% as Automated Cameras Target Illegal Stopping
Ben Gurion Airport enforcement surged by 709% since 2022 due to automated cameras, issuing 4,000 monthly fines for illegal stopping while offering a free waiting lot.

Drivers picking up passengers at Ben Gurion Airport face strict automated enforcement, with thousands of fines issued monthly for stopping in unauthorized zones.
According to recent reports, an average of 4,000 fines are handed out each month at the airport, totaling approximately 2 million shekels. If current enforcement rates persist, the annual figure could reach 48,000 tickets and about 24 million shekels. Data from a Knesset Research and Information Center report reveals a dramatic surge in enforcement, jumping from 6,305 tickets in 2022 to 50,995 in 2025—a 709% increase over three years and a 180% rise compared to 2024.
The Impact of Automated Cameras
The sharp increase is primarily driven by the deployment of automated surveillance cameras in August 2024, which document stationary vehicles without requiring a physical inspector on site. Out of the 2025 total, 46,278 citations (around 91%) were issued for parking in violation of road signs. Additional violations included 1,772 for traffic obstruction, 863 for sidewalk parking, and 820 for parking on pedestrian crossings.
Total collections between 2022 and 2025 reached approximately 28.4 million shekels, including fines, interest, and late fees. In 2025 alone, collections hit 16.5 million shekels, with the average fine hovering around 502 shekels.
Free Parking Alternative
To help drivers avoid these costly penalties, the Israel Airports Authority (IAA) operates a dedicated waiting lot where motorists can park free of charge for the first hour. Located just minutes away from the terminal, the lot allows drivers to wait comfortably until arriving passengers collect their luggage and confirm they are ready for pickup.
Drivers can navigate to the facility using Waze by searching for the designated waiting area. Airport authorities emphasize that unauthorized stopping not only results in heavy fines but also creates severe traffic congestion and safety hazards around the terminal.
