Passenger Alleges United Airlines Crew Forced Her to Sit Next to Man Who Masturbated Onboard

According to her statement to NBC News, after she reported the incident to the flight crew, she was allowed to stand in the aisle, but as the plane approached landing, she was instructed to return to her seat next to the man despite expressing severe distress and discomfort.

Incident Details and Crew Response

The incident took place on September 3, aboard a morning flight that departed at approximately 6:00 AM from Rochester, New York, to Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey. The passenger, a trauma therapist working with children in crisis, stated that the man seated beside her appeared to be in his late 30s and did not initially arouse suspicion. However, mid-flight, she noticed him masturbating in the adjacent seat.

When she alerted the cabin crew, they permitted her to stand in the aisle for a portion of the flight. As the aircraft prepared for landing, crew members instructed her to resume her seat and fasten her seatbelt. When she refused, explaining that she was terrified to sit next to the individual again, she was informed that no alternative seats were available on the fully booked flight.

This is the first time I felt like I was intentionally trapped by the people who were supposed to help me, she told NBC News.

The passenger stated that despite her repeated objections, the crew insisted she return to her seat for what they claimed would be only five minutes before landing. In reality, due to their location at the rear of the aircraft, she was forced to remain seated near the man until all other passengers had disembarked. When she approached a United Airlines representative at the gate to complain about the handling of the situation, the employee allegedly responded, "What am I supposed to do about it?

She subsequently filed formal complaints with the airline, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and contacted the FBI. Furthermore, the passenger expressed outrage over subsequent written communication from a United customer service representative, who offered a $100 travel voucher against a $400 ticket and used phrasing she felt blamed her for feeling unsafe.

United Airlines issued a brief statement confirming that it is reviewing the incident, though no further details have been released at this time.
