Strong earthquake hits off the coast of Mexico: The third in the last month
Earthquakes have become almost routine as natural disasters strike different regions around the world every day. This time it was in Mexico, where a 5.7 magnitude tremor was felt.
In recent months, we have witnessed a series of earthquakes around the world of varying magnitudes. Some have claimed the lives of thousands, while others, by great fortune, resulted in no casualties.
This morning, Tuesday, reports arrived of another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 that was felt off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico. As of now, there have been no reports of significant destruction or casualties.
The southern region of Mexico has been in a state of high seismic activity in recent weeks, following a 5.2 magnitude earthquake on August 16 and a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake in mid-July.
Just two days ago, a powerful earthquake struck eastern Indonesia, in the area of Flores Island, causing heavy damage, numerous casualties, and the evacuation of residents from their homes. According to data from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the magnitude of the tremor was initially estimated at 6.9, but the United States Geological Survey later estimated the magnitude of the main shock at 7.7.
Last week, a deadly earthquake struck Colombia, resulting in the deaths of approximately 200 people. The tremor had a magnitude of 7.4 and a depth of about 103 kilometers; it was defined by the Geological Survey as the strongest measured in the country in the current century.
