Alice Jill Edwards, who served as the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture from August 2022 to July 2026, has leveled sharp criticism against her colleagues within the organization. In a personal op-ed published in the British newspaper The Daily Telegraph, she accused them of an obsessive focus on one side of the conflict in Gaza, thereby severely damaging the UN's credibility.

Edwards described her visit to Kibbutz Kfar Aza, about 14 months after the October 7 massacre, as one of the hardest moments of her tenure. When Mandy Damari and Shimon Steinbrecher, the mothers of female hostages Romi and Doron, led her through their daughters' destroyed homes, bullet marks were visible on everyday household items such as microwaves and refrigerators. The visit led her to the conclusion that hostage-taking must be treated as a form of torture, affecting not only the abductees but also their family members who endure agonizing psychological suffering while awaiting their fate.

Edwards pointed out that fellow rapporteurs Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, and Reem Alsalem, Special Rapporteur on violence against women, failed to officially document rape, sexual abuse, and severe violence despite what Edwards termed "indisputable" evidence. According to Edwards, the two continued to publish one-sided reports filled with animosity, while offering unjustified explanations for ignoring the subject.

Reflecting on her own work, Edwards noted that when she published a report on the events of October 7, including the massacre of over 370 young people at the Nova music festival, only one other special rapporteur agreed to sign it. She highlighted systemic structural failures within the UN, including a meager budget, unpaid roles, and reliance on state-sponsored funding that creates a conflict of interest. She also criticized UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for lacking the genuine will to reform the system, stating that when independence is used to relentlessly advance a political agenda, the entire UN is weakened.
