France Erupts in Riots and Looting as Surreal Scenes Go Viral
Massive riots and looting have swept France amid protests over the cost of living, leading to over 2,000 arrests. While cities burn, viral videos captured surreal scenes of tourists and locals displaying utter indifference.

Riots and Chaos Sweep France
A weekend of chaos, violence, and looting swept through the streets of France, leaving behind burning barricades and tear gas clouds. According to the French Ministry of Interior, approximately 550,000 people participated in the protests nationwide, with around 110,000 in France, specifically in Paris. Protest organizers, however, claimed the total number of participants reached roughly 800,000. What began as a demonstration against the high cost of living quickly deteriorated into widespread riots and a loss of control.
More than 2,000 people were arrested, and hundreds were injured, many of them police officers and members of French security forces. Rioters targeted major cities, looting and vandalizing shops in Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux. The French government blamed the extreme left for the unrest, while right-wing politicians pointed to immigration and radical Islam.
Surreal Indifference Amid the Flames
Amid the violence and burning streets, social media filled with surreal footage depicting ordinary life continuing as if nothing was happening. One widely shared video showed a man and a woman sitting at a café near the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, calmly drinking wine and smoking while a massive garbage bin burned directly behind them, evoking the famous "this is fine" meme.
Other viral clips showed a woman casually jogging past burning bicycle barricades, tourists pulling their suitcases through debris-filled streets amid fleeing protesters, and passengers on a routine Seine River cruise filming thick black smoke rising over the city. Meanwhile, an AI-generated image of an elderly couple supposedly robbed by rioters went viral before being debunked by fact-checkers who noticed anatomical errors such as four fingers.
