Landslide at municipal landfill in Conakry leaves at least 22 dead

A mountain of trash collapsed on Sunday in Conakry, the capital of Guinea, leaving at least 22 people dead, according to the country's director of civil defense. The closure of the site had been scheduled for this very day.

Although authorities had ordered the preventive evacuation of families living in the area in the preceding days due to the risk of collapse, many residents were still in their homes when the incident occurred.

Heavy rains, which began at 03:00 local time, triggered a massive landslide of waste that buried several shacks and temporary structures located in the danger zone. Official reports on the number of fatalities and injuries are being updated continuously. Emergency teams remain on the scene, conducting search and rescue operations among the debris.
