A 660% jump: The product Israelis were buying in bulk before the school year
Unusual shopping data reveals exceptional demand across the country just before the first bell, as parents abandon physical stores in favor of purchasing essential items via app.
In the final days before the start of the school year, data from the Wolt app reveals exceptional shopping demand from parents and students across the country. Over the last 48 hours, a dramatic 660% jump was recorded in orders for shirts with school emblems compared to the same period last week.
Alongside clothing, a sharp increase was recorded in all categories of school supplies. Notebook orders jumped by 320%, lunch boxes rose by 260%, and writing supplies such as rulers and scissors saw an increase of 135%. Pencil cases and drinking bottles also enjoyed high demand, with increases of tens of percent.
An analysis of clothing orders shows that 65% were for classic t-shirts, while 35% of customers preferred dry-fit shirts. Additionally, shirts intended for boys accounted for 58% of total orders, compared to 42% for girls' shirts.
The sharp rise in demand was felt in all major cities. Tel Aviv leads the list with a 150% jump in equipment orders, followed by Petah Tikva with an increase of 120%, Haifa with 115%, Jerusalem with 100%, and the Sharon region with 95%.
Israel Avrahami, VP of Retail at Wolt Israel, explained that the return to school has become a last-minute race:
«Today, Israelis prefer to complete everything they are missing—from notebooks to lunch boxes and shirts—at the click of a button, getting items delivered directly to their homes without the need to wait in long lines at stores.»
