A 45% jump: The currency that returned to a nearly decade-long high
For the first time since 2018: Do the growing interest in anonymous currencies and the move by Grayscale signal a deeper change in the market?

The currency has become one of the most prominent stories in the crypto market after its price jumped by about 45% in one day and crossed the $800 threshold for the first time since 2018. During 24 hours, the ZEC currency moved between about $589 and a peak of about $851. This is an exceptionally unusual move for a currency that has been operating in the market for a decade, and the sharp rise comes against the backdrop of renewed interest in currencies that focus on user privacy, alongside trading volumes of billions of dollars in futures contracts.
Zcash was launched in 2016 and is based in part on the design principles of Bitcoin, but it also offers the option to perform transactions where certain details about the sender, receiver, or transfer amount can be hidden. Precisely now, as the currency has returned to price levels not seen in years, one of the main factors for the enthusiasm is the move by Grayscale to promote the conversion of the Grayscale Zcash Trust into an ETF product to be traded on the American stock exchange. The company filed an additional amendment to the registration documents, set an annual management fee of 2.5%, and plans, subject to regulatory approvals, to list the product for trading on the New York Stock Exchange.
In simple terms, an ETF may allow investors to gain exposure to the price of Zcash through a familiar financial product, without purchasing and holding the currency themselves. However, it is important to emphasize that the product still depends on the completion of the regulatory process, and therefore the rise in price also reflects expectations for the future and not just a change that has already been completed.
In addition, Grayscale documents revealed that a company related to the Digital Currency Group is in talks regarding a possible donation of about 200,000 ZEC coins to the fund, a deal that is not binding at this stage. The combination of the possibility of an ETF, institutional interest, and strong trading momentum helped push Zcash to the sharp rise.
The jump reminds investors how quickly the crypto market can change. A currency that traded for years far from its historical highs managed in one day to return to the headlines and record one of the sharpest movements in the market. The question now is whether the enthusiasm surrounding the ETF will turn into long-term demand, or if the 45% rise was mainly a speculative reaction to the news momentum. Either way, Zcash, a currency that was almost forgotten, proved that declines over nearly a decade do not necessarily mean that its story is over.
