How many times have you asked an artificial intelligence chatbot a question and received an answer that seemed perfect and completely professional? Most of us do this daily, whether for work or to solve everyday problems. However, the following story clearly illustrates why blind reliance on these tools, without further verification, can end in a heavy economic disaster that could have been easily avoided with a simple web search.

The advice that destroyed 25 acres of crops

A 67-year-old farmer from the city of Chuzhou in China, who had recently begun to trust the capabilities of artificial intelligence, decided to consult a chatbot to address a weed and pest problem in his sesame field, which spanned about 25 acres. The chatbot provided him with a detailed recipe for mixing various pesticides. The farmer acted exactly according to the instructions and sprayed the entire field, but the next morning he discovered to his astonishment that all the sesame seedlings had withered and died overnight.

The critical error stemmed from the fact that the chatbot recommended a combination of chemicals that included a substance intended for destroying broad-leaved weeds. Since the sesame plant itself is defined as a broad-leaved plant, the substance destroyed the crops themselves much faster than the weeds. Agricultural experts confirmed that mixing these chemicals was particularly destructive, especially given that the farmer sprayed the entire field instead of performing the targeted spraying that was required.

How to protect yourself from AI-induced damage

The frustrated farmer returned to the chatbot to understand what went wrong and discovered that he had simply failed to notice the warning that appeared on the screen. Like most artificial intelligence tools today, this chatbot displayed an explicit warning that the information produced might be incorrect and should be verified. This lack of attention cost him the loss of his entire crop, and perhaps even the use of the land for an entire season.

This painful event is an important reminder for us all. To avoid similar losses in daily life, at work, or in your studies, always remember to verify critical advice from artificial intelligence through a simple web search or by consulting with professionals. Do not trust the first answer you receive from the screen with your eyes closed.
