From Hiker to Trail Angel: Supporting Travelers on the Israel National Trail
After hiking the Israel National Trail, Tzur Zar became a trail angel in She'ar Yashuv, offering lodging, food, and guidance to weary travelers and beginners alike.

Walking the Israel National Trail for two and a half months left a lasting impression on Tzur Zar. After relocating to She'ar Yashuv in the Upper Galilee, he noticed a shortage of trail angels—volunteers who open their homes to hikers—and decided to become one himself.
The Trail Angel Network
Maintained by the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel, the directory of trail angels allows hikers to coordinate stays in advance. Hospitality is generally offered free of charge, providing a warm bed, a shower, laundry facilities, and sometimes a hot meal.
"It was a special and good experience to be hosted by trail angels," Zar recalls. "When I realized this is what I wanted to do, I signed up. It is fun to meet interesting people and to be on the hosting side."
Supporting Hikers at Every Stage
Zar lives near the northern terminus of the trail, giving him a unique perspective on travelers. He frequently hosts those just beginning their journey as well as those finishing their months-long trek.
-
Starting out: Nervous, full of questions, and uncertain of what lies ahead.
-
Finishing: Exhausted, emotional, and triumphant after completing the journey.
By sharing his own experiences, Zar helps ease the anxieties of new hikers while celebrating the milestones of those completing the route, closing a meaningful personal circle.
