The Surprising Study Proving Turtles Are Smart, Emotional, and Optimistic
Groundbreaking research from the University of Lincoln reveals that turtles are intelligent, emotionally complex, and surprisingly optimistic animals when kept at the right temperature.
Contrary to the popular perception of turtles as slow, indifferent, and expressionless, groundbreaking research at the Cold-Blooded Cognition Laboratory at the University of Lincoln in England reveals they are intelligent, sensitive, and remarkably optimistic creatures. Established in 2007 by researcher Anna Wilkinson following her bond with her pet turtle, Moses, the lab set out to shatter long-standing stigmas surrounding the cognitive and emotional worlds of reptiles.
Unlocking Reptile Intelligence Through Temperature
At the center of the studies are red-footed tortoises, a species native to South America and the Lesser Antilles, known for their unique shell patterns and bright markings. Researchers discovered that previous experiments failed to demonstrate reptile capabilities not due to cognitive limitations, but simply because of room temperature. Because turtles cannot regulate their own body heat, a cold environment causes lethargy and inactivity.
Once the room temperature is maintained at a warm, constant 28 degrees Celsius, the turtles demonstrate exceptional vitality. They recognize their keepers and dash toward them with surprising agility. A series of experiments proved these turtles are fast learners with impressive spatial memory, successfully navigating complex mazes using mental maps.
Social Learning and Optimism
Furthermore, despite being solitary creatures in nature, researchers discovered that turtles are capable of social learning—directly imitating the behavior of another turtle that discovered hidden food. The highlight of the research was a study led by Tatiana Höfner, which tested whether turtles view the world through an optimistic or pessimistic lens.
The turtles exhibited a distinct optimistic approach: they ran with determination toward an unfamiliar, ambiguous bowl in anticipation of finding a reward, displaying complete calmness and positive curiosity.
These findings open a new window into understanding reptile welfare, demanding a more considerate and profound approach to their care as pets and in captivity.
