During a campaign rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, U.S. President Donald Trump declared that he is considering renaming one of the major oceans—either the Atlantic or the Pacific—to "Trump Ocean" or the "Ocean of the Americas".

Trump explained that after his administration already moved to change the names of a gulf and a lake, it is time for the United States to have its own ocean and river. However, he clarified that he does not intend to alter the names of major historical rivers such as the Hudson and the Mississippi.

A Pattern of Geographic Renaming

This statement joins a series of initiatives led by Trump since returning to the White House, during which he has sought to rename geographic sites and public institutions. Some of these moves have sparked political, legal, and diplomatic controversies.

One prominent case is the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America". Trump signed an executive order instructing federal authorities in the U.S. to use the new name. The move triggered diplomatic tensions with Mexico as well as a clash with the Associated Press, which refused to adopt the name. Conversely, technology companies, including Google, updated the name on their mapping services for users in the United States.

"We are looking at renaming the oceans, and we want to ensure that American greatness is reflected in our geography," Trump told supporters during the rally.

Controversial Institutional and State Changes

In another instance, Trump signed an executive order changing the name of Lake Ontario, located on the U.S.-Canada border, to "Lake America", against the backdrop of a trade war and tariffs between the two countries.

The highest mountain in North America has also been at the center of a dispute. Trump reversed a 2015 Obama administration decision and ordered the peak's name restored to "Mount McKinley", named after former President William McKinley, replacing the name "Denali". Additionally, Trump suggested changing the name of New Mexico to "New America", though he noted the final decision would rest with its residents.

The initiatives have extended beyond geographic sites. The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington also became the focus of a renaming effort. After Trump replaced several board members, the board voted to add his name to the institution, designating it as "The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Center". The step drew public criticism and legal petitions.

These maneuvers serve as a tool for Trump to advance his agenda. Renaming sites associated with neighboring countries aligns with messages of political and commercial pressure, while repeated uses of the name "America" and efforts to attach his name to public institutions reflect his emphasis on personal and national branding under the banner of "America First".
