Pakistan declared a state of emergency in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which is controlled by the opposition. According to reports in the New York Times, the federal government imposed direct rule on the province and stripped its elected leaders of their powers, against the backdrop of a sharp surge in violence by terror organizations in the region.

Escalation in the Political Conflict

The unusual step marks a severe escalation in the struggle between the central government, which enjoys the backing of the powerful military, and the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) opposition party founded by former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The opposition party, which governs the province, swiftly condemned the move, calling it an undemocratic attempt to nullify the lawful choice of the residents.

The takeover occurs shortly after the party organized a series of turbulent protests and called for the release of Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023.

Direct Rule and Military Deployment

At the request of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the cabinet, President Asif Ali Zardari exercised his constitutional authority allowing him to take over provinces during emergencies. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the administration of the province has been transferred to the governor, a representative of the federal government, who will be assisted by an 11-member advisory council. Tarar added that Pakistani military forces will be deployed in the area to assist the new administration.

The government justified its measures by citing a severe breakdown in law and order, accusing provincial officials of failing to secure the border with Afghanistan and handling the Pakistani Taliban leniently. Meanwhile, human rights organizations warned that imposing governor's rule could deepen political tensions and undermine fragile democratic processes.
