US President Donald Trump held two phone conversations with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan within less than 24 hours to congratulate him and the Turkish people on the country's 103rd Republic Day, celebrated on October 29. According to reports from Turkish media, the second unexpected call took place during a festive state dinner in Ankara hosted by Erdogan for the leaders of the Organization of Turkic States, who gathered in the Turkish capital for the group's 13th summit.

Greetings to Regional Leaders

According to the Turkish Directorate of Communications, Trump was aware that regional leaders would be attending the celebratory dinner in Ankara and asked Erdogan to convey his warm regards to all those seated at the table. Erdogan obliged and passed the warm wishes from the American president to the assembled leaders.

During the conversation, Erdogan briefed Trump on the significance of the 13th summit of the Organization of Turkic States, noting that crucial decisions would be made to advance the organization, which he described as an address for stability and security in Central Asia, a region with a population exceeding 200 million. Trump wished Erdogan and the member states great success at the summit.

Bilateral Relations and Global Crises

This festive call came just hours after a prolonged and complex telephone conversation between the two leaders. During that initial formal discussion, they addressed bilateral relations between Washington and Ankara, the upcoming centenary of diplomatic ties next year, and a series of global crises.

Erdogan emphasized to Turkey that Ankara is closely monitoring developments in the Strait of Hormuz and Yemen within the framework of the Makkah joint defense alliance, and expressed full Turkish readiness to mediate and assist in renewing diplomatic negotiations between Russia and Ukraine to bring an end to the war.
