Tragedy on vacation: Influencer killed in helicopter crash in Brazil
17-year-old Sofia Murillo perished alongside her mother, grandmother, and the pilot during a sightseeing tour over Rio de Janeiro. Her family members, waiting on the ground, discovered through news sites and social media that the helicopter had crashed in a wooded area and caught fire.
Sofia Murillo, a 17-year-old beauty and lifestyle influencer from Bogota, Colombia, was killed in a fatal helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro.
Murillo, who had hundreds of thousands of followers on TikTok and Instagram, perished alongside her mother Wendy (37), her grandmother Rocio (59), and the helicopter pilot Alessandro Rocha, one of the region's top instructors with over two decades of experience.
The tragic event occurred during a family vacation in Brazil, where the family had arrived to celebrate the 15th birthday of one of the family members. The panoramic flight was intended to view the Christ the Redeemer statue from a bird's-eye view.
Due to space limitations in the Robinson R44 helicopter, the group was divided into two separate flights of about 20 minutes each. Sofia, her mother, and her grandmother went on the first round, while the rest of the family waited in the hangar at the airport.
When the helicopter failed to return, the family members began to worry. After initial reports from the staff on-site about an "emergency landing," the family members remaining on the ground discovered the scale of the disaster through news sites and social media: the helicopter had crashed in a wooded and difficult-to-access area near the 'Vista Chinesa' viewpoint in the Tijuca Forest and caught fire.
Rescue forces summoned to the scene were forced to use rappelling equipment and climbing techniques to reach the steep site, but there were no survivors. The force of the impact and the fire that broke out as a result meant that Sofia was the only one identified on-site immediately thanks to documents left with her, while the identification of the other victims requires laboratory tests.
The helicopter crash has reopened the debate on the safety level of panoramic flights in the Rio area. Aviation authorities and the Center for Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents have launched an extensive investigation. The cockpit camera that recorded the flight was found intact and was handed over to investigators to determine the circumstances of the crash.
