Baking Star Tomer Umansky Opens Up About His Secret Tummy Tuck and Body Image
Baking star and social media influencer Tomer Umansky opens up about his recent tummy tuck surgery, his lifelong struggle with body image, and why this transformation feels like another coming out.

Tomer Umansky, a 31-year-old confectioner living in Lod, is best known as the winner of the second season of the baking reality show "Bake Off Israel" on Keshet 12. As a successful baking blogger, cookbook author, and vibrant social media personality with hundreds of thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok, Umansky is famous for his decadent, over-the-top cakes and pastries. Recently, he underwent a complex abdominoplasty—commonly known as a tummy tuck—to remove excess skin following significant weight loss. Umansky kept the procedure a secret until after the surgery, sparking a whirlwind of wild guesses from his curious followers.
Living in the Public Eye and Body Image
When asked if he expected such an intense reaction, Umansky admits he tried to drop hints, such as announcing that his popular home-baking workshops were going on a short hiatus. "My connection with my followers is very close, and I knew I had to update them because the usual Tomer wouldn't be around," he explains. Known for his upbeat, energetic persona, he knew he couldn't maintain his usual high-sparkle energy during recovery. Still, the sheer volume of responses caught him completely off guard. After posting a collage from the hospital bed, the guessing game began. Some followers suggested gender-reassignment surgery, while others speculated about intimate cosmetic procedures. Despite the invasive nature of some inquiries, Umansky took it in stride, acknowledging that choosing a life of public exposure comes with a price.
A New Coming Out
For Umansky, the tummy tuck represents more than just a physical adjustment—it is another milestone of personal liberation, much like coming out as gay. Having struggled with his weight since childhood, he recalls being relentlessly bullied in school in Lod. "From elementary school through high school, I was always 'the fat kid' and faced cruel taunts. It was my life's mission to hide my excess skin, almost as difficult as hiding my sexual orientation," he shares. Even his mother, whom he trusts implicitly, was initially dead set against the operation. However, after speaking with the surgeon, she realized how much emotional healing the procedure would bring. The recovery process has proven exceptionally grueling, but Umansky remains optimistic about his future.
"I'm a week and a bit post-op, and it is very complex for me. But I'm looking straight ahead. I want people to talk and laugh about this in a couple of months, remembering it as a distant memory of a dream coming true and a brand new life racing forward."
Balancing Comfort Food and Personal Growth
Despite the physical transformation, Umansky insists that his culinary philosophy remains entirely unchanged. When followers jokingly asked if his kitchen would now transition exclusively to quinoa, spinach, and kale, he quickly set the record straight. "I am staying just as I am. Quinoa and kale are wonderful, but surgery doesn't change who Tomer is. I only hope to be even happier and to keep bringing value and content to people." Looking ahead, Umansky plans to take a two-month hiatus from active content creation to focus entirely on his physical recovery, leaning on the immense wave of love and support he continues to receive from his community.
