Tel Aviv Reports Record Confiscations of Electric Scooters and Bikes in August
Tel Aviv-Yafo municipal inspectors confiscated a record 642 electric bicycles and scooters in August while issuing 7,667 fines, marking a sharp summer surge in traffic enforcement across the city.
Tel Aviv-Yafo municipal inspectors confiscated 642 electric bicycles and scooters in August, marking the highest monthly total since the municipality began enforcing regulations against two-wheeled electric vehicles in 2017. During the same month, inspectors issued 7,667 fines to riders for various traffic offenses.
Data released by the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality shows a significant surge in enforcement over the summer months. In June, 520 vehicles were confiscated and 4,450 fines were issued; in July, 484 vehicles were seized alongside 6,040 fines; and in August, confiscations jumped to 642 while fines climbed to 7,667.
Overall, between June and August, authorities confiscated 1,646 electric vehicles and issued 18,157 fines. For comparison, throughout the entirety of 2025, officials seized 2,460 vehicles and issued roughly 55,000 fines.
City officials noted that confiscating vehicles is a complex procedure, but emphasized it serves as a vital deterrent. An average of about 30 vehicles are seized daily, with special emphasis placed on high-pedestrian areas in the city center and Jaffa. The operation is carried out by municipal inspectors in cooperation with the SELAH and SHEFA departments and the Israel Police.
The crackdown primarily targets riding on sidewalks and pedestrian pathways, failure to wear a helmet, carrying passengers, and lacking license plates. Since September 1, 2025, the fine for operating a vehicle without a license plate stands at 500 shekels, up from 100 shekels previously. In addition to the fine, vehicles lacking proper license plates are subject to immediate confiscation.
