Living With Loss: Talia Glasser Shares Her Family's Journey Through Suicide
In an emotional interview, Talia Glasser shares the tragic loss of her sister Rachel to suicide, discussing the invisible nature of clinical depression and the family's journey toward open dialogue and awareness.
Mental health struggles are often invisible to the outside world. A person can maintain their daily routine, smile, and function while a severe storm rages inside. In a recent episode of the 'Journey Journal' podcast hosted by Chani Lipshitz, Talia Glasser shared an open, courageous, and painful conversation about the tragic death of her sister, Rachel, who took her life, and how her family learned to navigate the deep fracture and live alongside the loss.
The Gap Between Appearance and Inner Pain
One of the most poignant parts of the interview explored the contrast between external behavior and inner turmoil. Talia recounted that for a long time, the family did not realize they were dealing with severe mental illness and clinical depression. 'I didn't know it was called depression,' Talia shared. 'When you are caught up in daily routines, you don't always grasp the meaning of the signs until the medical diagnosis finally arrives.'
Rachel's complex medical diagnosis came just a year before the tragic loss. That year was tense and challenging for the entire family as they tried with all their might to support, assist, and comprehend a reality that had previously been entirely foreign to them.
Confronting Loss and Breaking the Stigma
When the disaster struck and it became clear that Rachel had ended her life, the family faced one of the most agonizing moments imaginable: how to deliver the devastating news to relatives and how to process such a complex trauma, which often carries false social stigmas and heavy feelings of guilt.
'The moment we shared the harsh news within the home was a shattering point of no return,' she described. 'Yet from the very first moment, we understood we had nothing to hide—we had to stay together, embrace one another, and speak about things with complete openness.'
The family's decision not to conceal the truth, but rather to speak openly about mental distress, was the vital first step that helped them find strength and begin healing.
A Mission to Save Lives
Rising from the rubble of grief, Talia looks back with determination to shift societal perceptions and save other lives. The daily struggle following the loss never truly ends, but it has taken on new meaning through raising public awareness about the critical importance of early detection of depression and mental distress.
'The daily struggle afterward is a journey without an end. The pain is present in every moment, but our mission today is to make people open their eyes. If someone notices the signs and realizes in time that this is depression, we can prevent the next tragedy,' Talia concluded.
