Syrian Man Emerges After Hiding Behind Wall for 13 Years

The story of Mohammad Zakour from Latakia is one of the most astonishing disappearance accounts in Syria. Zakour spent over 13 years hidden behind a wall in his grandfather's house, evading potential arrest by the regime of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, while his own children grew up believing he was dead.

A Self-Imposed Prison Behind a Wall

According to Zakour, the ordeal began after he was detained twice by security forces during the early years of the Syrian civil war. Warned by a relative that authorities were hunting for him again, he chose to vanish rather than face a third imprisonment. With the help of his wife, he purchased building materials and constructed a narrow compartment, barely a meter wide, behind a wall inside his grandfather's home.

For more than a decade, his wife was the only person who knew he was alive, smuggling food, water, medicine, and clothing through a small opening. When he fell ill, she described his symptoms to a doctor to secure the proper medications.

Growing Up Believing Their Father Was Dead

Perhaps the most heartbreaking aspect of the case involves his children. Fearing that the secret might accidentally slip, Zakour's wife kept his survival hidden from them. Over the years, the children grew up mourning a father who was living just meters away. Even his brother, residing in Turkey, had previously held a formal mourning tent for him.

Zakour spent years listening to his children's voices through the partition, helpless as his eldest son grew from a young child into a teenager. He missed entirely out on their upbringing despite sharing the same roof.

Liberation After the Fall of the Regime

His long isolation ended dramatically on December 8, 2024. Hearing victorious chants from the streets, he asked his wife what was happening. Upon learning that Bashar al-Assad's regime had collapsed, he realized the threat had vanished and finally emerged from his hiding place after more than 13 years.
