Several people were killed and injured Thursday in a severe traffic accident in the Swiss Alps after a tourist bus overturned between the towns of Susch and Zernez in the canton of Graubünden. Local police reported the tragic incident, which occurred late in the afternoon, noting it was a mass-casualty disaster.
According to a spokesperson for the Dutch Association of Travel Agencies, the bus—en route for a day trip to Switzerland from Austria—carried 48 passengers of Dutch nationality. The spokesperson told a Dutch newspaper that exact casualty figures could not be released at this stage, but confirmed the severity of the incident.
Large rescue and emergency teams, including multiple helicopters and numerous ambulances, rushed to the accident scene to extract victims and evacuate them to hospitals. Images published by Swiss news outlets showed the bus lying on its side next to a narrow road surrounded by emergency personnel. The town of Zernez serves as an entry point to the Swiss National Park.
