In the latest episode aired on MasterChef, the contestants experimented with flavors from Ethiopian cuisine when Chef Elazar Tamno arrived on the show. The unconventional flavors and the task that included cooking in pairs put many of the contestants under pressure, but not Nissim Zalait. Zalait, a graduate of the 11th season of the show, always appears as someone who maintains composure — a trait he likely brought with him from the battlefield. In recent years, and even more so since October 7, Zalait has served hundreds of days in the reserves, having recently arrived for an interview from several days in the field.

In the last episode, Zalait returned to a story, amusing in retrospect, from his military service period and his best friend in the unit:

"I have a lot of connection to Ethiopian cuisine. There is a love story between us, I really love the flavors and aromas. In my unit during service, there were two Ethiopians. With one of them, I have a story that must be told."

He declared this while his partner for the task, Gal Kaspers, wanted him to focus on preparing the dish.

"One day an argument started between me and D. (according to Zalait), I fought with him. A mess started, suddenly a hand is on both of us and the sergeant said: 'From now on, you connect your beds, on the base you walk hand in hand, even when you drop to the ground you lie on top of each other. If by chance I get up at night and see that you went to the bathroom without the friend, you will get a month of confinement'."

"We became good friends to this day," he added. By the way, regarding composure, the dish that Zalait eventually brought out was considered an exceptionally outstanding dish. After tasting it, Chef Yuval Ben Neria said that as far as he is concerned, it is one of the best salmon dishes he has eaten in his life.
