Oscar-winning director Spike Lee has opened up about the backlash and hostility he faces over his vocal support for Palestinians, revealing in a recent interview that he continues to receive hate mail and detailing a confrontation with a pro-Israel activist outside his Brooklyn home.

Speaking to Variety ahead of the Playback Film Festival in Brooklyn, Lee discussed industry concerns regarding the planned merger between Paramount and Warner Bros., expressing apprehension that the consolidation and the influence of pro-Donald Trump investors could limit his creative freedom. While he noted no direct professional sabotage so far, Lee acknowledged persistent hostility, pointing to an incident involving American influencer and pro-Israel advocate Lizzy Savetsky, who filmed herself outside his residence holding an Israeli flag and placing it in his mailbox.

Reflecting on the broader entertainment industry climate, Lee drew parallels to the treatment of actor Mark Ruffalo and cited NFL player Azeez Al-Shaair, who was fined by the league for wearing a sticker bearing the names of slain Palestinian children. Lee emphasized that despite the formidable influence of pro-Israel advocacy groups, many public figures refuse to compromise their convictions.

Lee's public stances have previously drawn controversy, including his appearance at the NBA All-Star Game wearing Palestinian symbols alongside Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija. Lee later clarified that his attire was intended to express solidarity with Palestinian civilians rather than target Avdija.
