Spain Supreme Court Upholds Four-Year Prison Sentence for Ex-Footballer Santi Mina

Spain's Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected the appeal of former professional footballer Santi Mina, upholding his four-year prison sentence for a sexual assault committed in 2017.

According to the ruling, the incident took place inside a parked vehicle near a nightclub in Mojacar, Almeria. The court determined that Mina took advantage of the situation to perform non-consensual sexual acts, dismissing his claim that he mistakenly believed the victim had consented.

Mina was initially convicted in May 2022 and sentenced to four years in prison. While his appeal was denied, the court reduced the moral damages compensation he is required to pay the victim from 50,000 euros to 25,000 euros.

Now 30 years old, Mina played for clubs including Celta Vigo and Valencia during his career, which ended approximately three years ago following a loan spell at Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab.
