Israeli Olympic triathlete Shahar Sagiv finished 31st at the World Championship Grand Final in Pontevedra, Spain, amidst heavy security and restrictions on national symbols.
Israeli Olympic triathlete Shahar Sagiv finished 31st at the World Championship Grand Final in Pontevedra, Spain.
Competing among 65 athletes in the Olympic distance (1,500m swim, 40km bike, and 10km run), the 31-year-old Maccabi Tel Aviv competitor was barred from wearing official Israeli gear featuring the national flag and the word "Israel". The event took place under heavy security amid anti-Israel protests.
Sagiv had a slow start in the water, but managed to close gaps during the cycling leg, joining the second peloton alongside the Paris 2024 Olympic gold and silver medalists, 40 seconds behind the leaders. During the run, hamstring cramps forced him to stop, stretch, and recover during the first lap. He recovered on the second lap, allowing him to improve his final standing.
Reflecting on the race, Sagiv said: "This is not the result I wanted. Analyzing the race with my team immediately afterward, we concluded that missing three months of training due to a leg injury is still affecting me, and I have not yet returned to full competitive rhythm at the highest level. I am confident that each such race will bring me back to peak performance, and I have three more competitions left before the end of the season."
